A Female with Her Hands Clasped

c. 1838
Richard Redgrave (English, 1804–1888) Published by The Etching Club, London
Redgrave took most of his subjects from contemporary literature, choosing moments of crisis that addressed such popular Victorian themes as self-sacrifice, loyalty, or faith. Although the literary source for this etching has not been identified, it most likely illustrates a text from a specific poem or tale about a woman yearning for her lover at sea.
