Francesco Nenci (Italian, 1781–1850) After Bertel Thorvaldsen (Danish (active Rome and Copenhagen) 1770–1844)

Nenci's work is typical of the late Florentine academic tradition at the turn of the eighteenth century, with its emphasis on smoothly polished surfaces and firm contours. This elegant drawing is a copy of a famous relief roundel modeled in Rome by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, Nenci's older contemporary, which was executed in a number of marble versions.
