A Pope Presenting a Standard to a Kneeling Man

c. 1562
Taddeo Zuccaro (Italian, 1529–1566)
This drawing is connected to two decorative projects on which Taddeo Zuccaro collaborated with his younger brother Federico, both celebrating the illustrious deeds of the Farnese family--one in their villa at Caprarola near Rome and the other in the Palazzo Farnese in the city. The Caprarola project contains two scenes in which a pope is shown bestowing an office on a kneeling member of the Farnese family.
