Seated Jizo

Early 14th century
Artist/maker unknown, Japanese
The advocate of souls facing trial in hell and a protector of children, Jizo is depicted sitting atop a lotus throne on a rocky bluff amid a sea of rolling waves. This idealized setting, painted with touches of gold, may be a reference to Jizo’s legendary abode, Mount Karadiya.
