Courtier's Tablet (Hu)

Artist/maker unknown, Chinese
A court official held such a tablet before his face during an imperial audience to keep his breath from offending the emperor. The tablet also served as a "notebook"-using water-based ink and a brush, the official could record the emperor's words on the ivory surface.
