The Chinese Masquerade

1735
Jean-Baptiste-Marie Pierre (French, 1714–1789) Dedicated to the Duc de Saint-Aigrian , French ambassador to Rome
While living in Rome, resident art students at the French Academy often took part in religious festivals. For the Carnival of 1735 they created an elaborate chariot and dressed up in Chinese-inspired costumes. Jean-Baptiste-Marie Pierre did not arrive in Rome until several months after the Carnival festivities took place and must have relied upon the testimony of the participants to create this etching.
