To create this striking lithograph, Kent drew his visage in reverse onto a slab of limestone using a greasy lithographic crayon. The image was then fixed on the stone using a chemical process that made the design receptive to ink but resistant to water. The lithograph was printed by running a sheet of dampened paper through a press along with the inked lithographic stone, resulting in a final image facing the correct direction.
