Daggoo Throws a Dart

1928-1930
Rockwell Kent (American, 1882–1971)
Herman Melville’s novel, Moby Dick, describes Daggoo as a six-foot-five African who was a harpooner on Captain Ahab’s ship, The Pequod. In this illustration, Kent captures the tension of the moment just before the hunter hurls his weapon into the back of a cresting whale.
