William Bell Scott (Scottish, 1811–1890)

William Bell Scott recorded this gloaming, or twilight, from the walled garden of his friend the Reverend J. C. Fairbairn's manse, or parish house, in Scotland. Beyond the wall in the distance rise the turrets of Ayton Castle, a mansion built in 1856 in imitation of a medieval castle. It has been suggested that Scott intended the landscape to be interpreted symbolically, painting the wall to represent the barrier between life and death.
