Woolworth Building, No. 1

1913
John Marin (American, 1870–1953) Published by Alfred Stieglitz (American, 1864–1946)
Marin's return to New York in 1910 coincided with the start of work on the Woolworth Building, the world's tallest skyscraper and one of Manhattan's most visible landmarks when completed in 1913. In this etching, the building seems to glisten in the rainy night. Marin evoked this singular effect in all four known impressions of this print by leaving wet ink on the plate and then impulsively working it with his fingertips and a rag.
