Abstract of Flowers

c. 1922
Arthur Beecher Carles (American, 1882–1952)
As an influential teacher, Arthur B. Carles orchestrated a modernist turn in Philadelphia still life. While his expressive use of color pushes this painting in the direction of pure abstraction, Carles maintains the recognizable and traditional still-life motif of blooming flowers.
