Lady with a Hat

1966
Designed by Krystyna Wojtyna-Drouet (Polish, born 1926)
Made during Krystyna Wojtyna-Drouet’s early career as a fiber artist, Lady with a Hat is characteristic of the artist’s unique representational tapestries. Starting with a rough sketch, Wojtyna-Drouet uses warp (lengthwise) yarns and weft (widthwise) yarns to build a substructure that serves as the foundation for her tapestry directly on the loom. Weaving subtle details, incorporating color, and creating texture, she uses the loom as a painter uses an easel. Constructed of purely geometric forms, Lady with a Hat is expressive, lively, and intimate.
