Mountain Ivy

Late 17th - early 18th century
Attributed to Ogata Kōrin (Japanese, 1658–1716)
The seventeenth-century artist Tawaraya Sotatsu introduced the technique of tarashikomi: one color applied over another not-quite-dry color, making an irregular blended hue. This image is an example of this type of very wet brushwork.
