The Promenade Deck

1920
Peggy Bacon (American, 1895–1987) Published by The New Republic
Peggy Bacon based this image on sketches she made of fellow travelers on the SS New Amsterdam, the ship on which she and her husband Alexander Brook sailed to Europe in 1920. This European sojourn, from 1920 to 1921, proved to be an unproductive and troubling time for Bacon, who gave birth to her first child abroad, suffered several illnesses, and found travel exhausting.
