Joseph Galloway was born in Maryland in 1731. After being admitted to the bar, he moved to Philadelphia, where he married Grace Growden and became a prominent lawyer. Loyal to the English crown, Galloway was appointed High Sheriff of Philadelphia during the British occupation in 1777. He fled to London in 1778 with his only daughter, Elizabeth, never to return. Elizabeth married William Roberts, an Englishman, and had one child, Grace Ann.
