Gertrude Stein

April 23, 1935
Carl Van Vechten (American, 1880–1964)
Originally from Oakland, California, Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) moved to Paris from Baltimore in 1903 and, with her brother, art critic Leo Stein, was among the first collectors of Cubist paintings by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. In her own innovative writings, the most famous of which is ironically titled The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (1933), Stein often imitated Cubist theories of fragmentation and repetition. Alice B. Toklas (1877-1967), herself a writer of memoirs and cookbooks, first met Stein when she left San Francisco for Paris in 1907, and the two became one of Paris's most famous and formidable couples. Between the two world wars, the apartment they shared became a lively salon for the Parisian avant-garde and American expatriates.
