Gertrude Stein

November 7, 1934
Carl Van Vechten (American, 1880–1964)
Carl Van Vechten began his friendship with Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas in 1913 in Paris, just before the outbreak of the First World War. A novelist, music critic, and photographer, Van Vechten had a flair for capturing the likenesses of his friends. His thousands of photographs of performers, musicians, actors, and other notables provide a unique chronicle of the cultural life in Europe and the United States from the 1930s through the 1960s.
