The Bay Window

1919
Edward Hopper (American, 1882–1967)
Scratching into the ground to make an etching is akin to drawing and allows the artist to make flowing, sketch-like lines. Notice the thin, nervous lines Hopper uses to describe the woman’s hand as she pulls a needle and invisible thread away from herself.
