The Bull Fight

1917
Edward Hopper (American, 1882–1967)
To support himself at the beginning of his career, Hopper made illustrations for popular magazines. This etching closely resembles his work as an illustrator in its choice of lively narrative subject. Hopper detested making commercial illustrations, although he was very successful at it and was awarded first prize in a 1918 wartime poster competition.
