Six-Post Canopy Bed

16th century
Artist/maker unknown, Chinese

Typically dressed with quilts and curtains, a canopy bed would have been one of the most important pieces of furniture in a traditional Chinese home. Not considered suitable just for sleeping, beds were used during the day as a means of escape from daily life.

The lattice design on the back and side rails is an auspicious motif that conveys wishes for abundance, encompassing that of many sons, wealth, happiness, and long life.
