Spring Landscape with Teahouse in a Mountain Setting

1959
Munakata Shikō (Japanese, 1903–1975)
After visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art in March 1959, Shiko Munakata made this ink painting for the Museum’s Japanese ceremonial teahouse, Sunkaraku (Evanescent Joys) (Philadelphia Museum of Art, 1928-114-1). The inscription reads, “Shiko while a guest in Pennsylvania, inspired by its pure charm,” and is followed by the artist’s square seal in red.
