Scroll Box

19th century
Artist/maker unknown, Japanese
The narrow format of this box indicates it was intended to hold a scroll, most likely a handscroll. The artist has used the length of the box to create the nandina motif on the top and sides. The silver handles use a stylized family crest design known as "five-star."
