Featuring Shakyamuni, the historical Buddha, this image once formed a set of five, or perhaps seven, banner paintings that were hung during the Buddhist ritual of Yeongsanjae, a ceremony performed on the forty-ninth day of a person’s passing to guide the soul to the most desirable heavenly destination, the Western Paradise.
