Saint Peter Regulus Carried by Angels

A member of the Franciscan order, Saint Peter Regulus was known for his devotion to a life of strict poverty. On the day of the Feast of the Annunciation, which celebrates the angel Gabriel appearing to the Virgin Mary to announce that she will bear the son of God, Peter was in a convent near Valladolid, Spain, when he remembered a sculpture of the Virgin housed in a Franciscan church in La Aguilera, a district in modern-day Burgos that lay many miles away. He told his fellow friars of his desire to see this statue again and angels miraculously appeared to fulfill his wish. In this painting Peter contemplates the sculpture, which appears in the air above his head, while the angels carry him from Valladolid to La Aguilera, visible in the distance.
