The assortment of flowers in a woven basket and the bowl of fruit on this dish are visual puns expressing auspicious wishes, including wealth and prosperity (peony flower) and blessings and longevity (Buddha’s Hand citron fruit). Popular in the eighteenth century, such depictions were found not only on porcelains but also on other decorative arts. During this period the transfer of imagery across different mediums was facilitated by the increase in commercial woodblock printing in South China.
