Model of a Right Wheeler Horse for “A May Morning in the Park (The Fairman Rogers Four-in-Hand)”

1879 (cast 1946)
Thomas Eakins (American, 1844–1916)
Eakins made these sculptures in an effort to create a precisely accurate picture of horses in motion for his painting A May Morning in the Park (The Fairman Rogers Four-in-Hand). He based the positions of the horses' hooves on the famous photographs of trotting and galloping horses made by photographer Eadweard Muybridge in 1878.
