Portrait of Professor Gosset

c. 1917-1918
Raymond Duchamp-Villon (Pierre-Maurice-Raymond Duchamp) (French, 1876–1918)
Probably the sculptor's last work, this portrait depicts the army doctor who attended Duchamp-Villon after he contracted typhoid fever at the front. The tiny disembodied head is reduced to the form of a skull with sunken eye sockets and a dark, pitted surface. It seems to reveal the artist's sense of his own mortality as he approached an untimely death.
