Artist/maker unknown, Chinese Formerly attributed to Giuseppe Castiglione (Lang Shining) (Italian, 1688–1766)
In 1714 Giuseppe Castiglione, a native Italian, trained artist, and Jesuit missionary, was sent to China. The following year he was presented to the Kangxi emperor. Castiglione adopted the Chinese name Lang Shih-ning and served as an artist at the Qing court from 1715 until his death in 1766. He adapted his paintings to court tastes by combining Western and Chinese techniques, often working in close collaboration with Chinese painters.
