Landscape

19th century
Attributed to Kimura Ritsugaku (Japanese, 1827–1890)
This painting demonstrates Kimura Ritsugaku’s expertise in Japanese-style brushwork; however, the rolling hills that fade off into the distant ocean reflect the influence of Western artistic practices. The study of these styles was considered to be as important as the study of Western science and philosophy in regard to Japan’s development as a modern nation state.
