This cup commemorates a horse race held at the Wantage Race Track in England in 1795 and bears the inscription:
Wantage Cup./Edwd Lovedon Lovedon Esqr)/ Edwin Martin Atkins Esqr) Stewards/Tuesday Septr 22nd/1795
Horse racing in eighteenth-century England was a sport principally supported by the landed and wealthy, and the trophies rewarded were inevitably costly objects.
