Plate

1725-1750
Made by De Porceleyne Byl (The Porcelain Ax), Delft (1657–1803)
The menacing, fire-spitting dragon in the center of this plate is a misrepresentation of the benevolent dragon of Chinese legend. It indicates that the Dutch ceramic painter who imitated the Chinese motif did not understand its symbolism.
