Portrait of Benjamin Franklin

1777-1785
Attributed to Antoine Noël Benoît de Graincourt (French, 1748–1823)
Franklin brought this miniature from France to Philadelphia as a present for his daughter, Sarah Franklin Bache. It is a small version of the Joseph-Siffred Duplessis portrait of which Franklin approved. The miniaturist Graincourt is known to have exhibited a miniature like this one at the 1779 Salon de la Correspondence in Paris.
