Armchair

Late 17th century
Artist/maker unknown, Dutch
The inscription on the chair back reads [translated], “Heer Steeven Cornelis Janssens de Huioel, knight, formerly burgomaster and master of this room, 1693.” A burgomaster was a position conferred to prominent citizens of Dutch cities, giving them the responsibilities of a mayor and magistrate for a specified period. This chair symbolized the status and importance of its owner, even in his absence.
