This wax miniature is a formal portrait of a Hungarian magnate, dressed as he might appear at for a ceremonial event. The modeling of the face is finely detailed, capturing each wrinkle, and giving a strong sense of a specific individual. With its ornamental fastenings and trim, this kind of jacket was a symbol of national pride. The ceremonial chain and medals suggest high rank.
The era in which this portrait was made, the mid-1800s, was a transitional moment in Hungarian history—the country revolted against rule by the Hapsburg royal family in 1848, then became subject to an Austrian military dictatorship, and in 1867 became part of the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary.
