Portrait of a Gentleman

c. 1830-1843
Josef Schön (Austrian, 1809–1843)

Josef Schön was a coin engraver and medalist working in Vienna, where he produced portraits of some of the most prominent individuals of the day, including members of the Austrian royal family. He trained as a coin engraver at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and worked at the Vienna mint for several years in the 1830s. He typically used wax as a preliminary medium for his medals, but few of his waxes survive today, making this an important signed example.
