This portrait by the Tyrolean sculptor Johann Baptist Pendl is remarkable for its well-preserved, colorful details, from the yellow stripes on the sitter’s waistcoat to the white polka dots on his red cravat. An inscription on the frame’s reverse tells us that the sitter is Franz Niclas Siller, a tradesman in Haffnerzell, a Bavarian village on the Danube near the border with Austria. The inscription also includes a dedication to his cousins, Clara and Anna Siller—a testament to the deeply personal nature of wax miniatures.
