Childe Hassam

1934
Peggy Bacon (American, 1895–1987)

In this drawing, Peggy Bacon portrayed fellow artist Childe Hassam in his studio, carefully tapping down nails to allow the damp paper of an etching to dry without crinkling. Bacon depicted everyday life with a satirical bent—her work included book illustrations and cartoons for the New Yorker and other magazines. This sensibility is evident in her charming portrait of Hassam, who helped bring the French Impressionist style to the United States. Bacon spent time observing the older artist at work and noted his facial features and mannerisms in her 1934 book Off with Their Heads!, a collection of caricatures of famous individuals that included this image. She captures such details in crayon here, paying particular attention to the backs of Hassam’s hands and the laces of his shoes.
