In this intense study of the natural world, Emily Brown captured the effect of freshly fallen snow in a dense forest. By delicately applying ink wash and adjusting its saturation, Brown rendered a sense of depth and shadow in the woods, created the impression of an overcast sky on a snowy day, and conveyed the feeling of wet snow, simultaneously cool and fluffy. Brown often depicts the landscape she observes near her home in Philadelphia, a setting she knows intimately.
