The Dorset Coast

c. 1933
Margaretta S. Hinchman (American, 1876–1955)

Margaretta Hinchman was predominantly a landscape artist, often creating illustrations for publication in books. Born in Philadelphia, she frequently depicted the landscape of Pennsylvania and the surrounding environment, but her travels occasionally led her to portray other locations. Here she shows the seaside of Dorset in southern England, known as the Jurassic Coast. The undulating curves of the cliffs fill the majority of the composition, but at the far left a glimpse of the ocean can be seen at the horizon line.
