In addition to small and large Japanese-inspired plaques, Edmond Lachenal also produced fanciful vases and sculptural objects such as this container shaped like a bottle gourd—a durable, preindustrial vessel for holding liquids. Known in Japan as a hyotan, the gourd is a symbol of longevity and success. Lachenal decorated the vase with bold, flowing colors inspired by Japanese glazes and with two wonderful, snarling winged dragons.
