Oz Socks

1978
Susanna E. Lewis (American, 1938–2021)
Susanna E. Lewis humorously reimagined one of her favorite films, The Wizard of Oz (1939), as a pair machine knitted stockings complete with Dorothy’s iconic ruby slippers. The right leg represents Kansas, the left shows Emerald City, and the garters read "Somewhere over the rainbow" and "We’re off the see the Wizard." The Oz Socks were included in The Great American Foot exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in 1978, the year they were made. The film version of the musical, The Wiz, based on the original L. Frank Baum novel published in 1905, was also released that year.
