Family Portrait with the Photograph George Took of Christina Before They Were Married, Tennessee

2008
Lucas Foglia (American, born 1983)

From 2006 to 2010, Lucas Foglia became friends with and photographed people living “off the grid” in the southeastern United States—people who choose to move out of cities or suburbs to the country or mountains with the goal of becoming mostly or entirely self-sufficient. Often they grow and hunt their own food, build their own homes from local materials, and make their own clothes.

Here Foglia shows the extreme difference between this family’s past and present ways of living. Christina shares a photograph her husband took of her on their wedding day. Next to her, he turns to his side to reveal a tattoo peeking out from under his shirt sleeve. The picture and tattoo are both reminders of their old life, before they chose to leave their jobs and move to a rural farm in Tennessee.
