Iona

2004-2006
Sean Scully (American (born Ireland), born 1945)
The tiny island of Iona, located in the Inner Hebrides off the western coast of Scotland, has been a place of historical and cultural significance since the sixth century, when an Irish missionary established a monastic community there. Sean Scully visited the picturesque tourist destination only once, in 1990, yet the experience was so strong and lasting that it would manifest itself over a decade later in this remarkable painting. The format of this work as a triptych could be read as an allusion to Christian altarpieces.
