Sebald Beham (German, 1500–1550)

This engraving by Hans Sebald Beham is from a set of ten that depict lively peasant couples dancing, each pair representing a month of the year. The series ends with scenes of carousing, fighting, and other forms of excess. Beham’s images of peasant life reflect the growing taste for genre scenes in this period.
