The Dentist

c. 1764-1767
Giovanni Volpato (Italian, 1735–1803) After Francesco Maggiotto (also known as Francesco Fedeli) (Italian, 1738–1805)
Volpato's engraving is one of a series of twelve scenes of late-eighteenth-century Italian life. The banner at the edge of the platform proclaims in Latin FAMA VOLAT (reputation flies). It also shows the dentist holding a letter of recommendation, which bears a drawing of a large, diseased molar. The dentist himself extracts a similar tooth from the mouth of his tormented patient.
