Woman's Evening Ensemble: Dress and Wrap

Fall/winter 2008
Designed by Ralph Rucci (American, born Philadelphia, 1957)
Ralph Rucci describes this gown as "a simple, utilitarian apron in wool jersey taken to a level of complete luxury." Known for his innovative and exacting approach to cut and construction, the Philadelphia-born designer studied literature and philosophy at Temple University; he cited quantum mechanics-the physics of waves-as inspiration for this collection. The dress's front, attached to the narrow back bodice only at the shoulders, wraps and ties in apron fashion, and masterful tucks echo the garment's form like radiating waves. The beautifully shaped shawl uses the black, warped threads of the bronze taffeta to make fringe.
