African Buns

1993
Keith Morrison (American (born Jamaica), born 1942) Published by Brandywine Workshop, Philadelphia
The eclectic blend of African, Caribbean, and American references in Morrison’s imagery reflects his keen awareness of the Caribbean as a gateway of transatlantic culture, rich with reciprocal influences. This print offers a humorous take on different uses of the beach, with improvised furnishings: the matches—a pun on “matchbox houses”—replace huts and cooking pits. The Nigerian sculptures gazing at the shoreline are depicted with sunburned backsides and African cowrie shells serve as the mouth of the lounging doll-figure, whose patterned dress references an American flag.
