Document Box

c. 1970
Inlay by Musashigawa Yoshinori (Japanese, born 1949) Box made by Komai Kazuo (Japanese) Made at Shibata Lacquer Studio, Takaoka, Japan
This lovely lacquer box is a modern creation in the kachō-ga (bird and flower) painting tradition. Depicted here is a finch perched on a branch of flowering cherry. The velvet-black background is a perfect foil for the colors of the mother-of-pearl inlay.
