Surya Mandala

c. 1800-1850
Artist/maker unknown, Nepalese
The Hindu god Surya, the sun, rides out of the center of this painting atop his horse-drawn chariot. Other deities surround him, each within a petal-shaped halo that creates a large flower resembling the sun itself. Around this sunflower-sun are twelve circles, each containing one of the constellations of the zodiac. The Indian signs of the zodiac are identical to those used in the West. The bands above and below are populated by other deities and holy men.
