The Virgin Appearing to Saint Simon Stock

1759
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo (Italian (active Venice, Würzburg, and Madrid) 1727–1804) After a painting by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (Italian (active Venice, Udine, Würzburg, and Madrid) 1696–1770)
Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo's etching is based on a ceiling painting by his father, Giovanni Battista, for the main room in the Scuola of the Carmelites in Venice, dating from around 1740. Scuole (schools) were confraternities, organizations of lay people, including the lower classes, which performed charitable work and sponsored festivities. The buildings that housed their offices were often decorated by the premier artists of the city. In this image, the Virgin appears to Saint Simon Stock, a Superior General of the Carmelite Order from the thirteenth century, and promises that all Carmelite monks and nuns who wear the order's habit at their deaths will be granted salvation.
